FIRST RECORDING OF RED HAIRED BOY

Liam and I have started recording some of his music. This is our first attempt at a multi-track recording using Garage Band to create an MP3.

Lots of learning to go….but fun so far!!!!

I recognize June by the flowers, now. I used to know it by review tests, and restlessness.

MUSIC IS A THEME OF OUR “CURRICULUM”

I heard an elder speak once about the school she attended in Galax, Virginia back in the 1940s…music was not a luxury, music was not an elective, music was not something you had to fight for funding - music was a standard part of the daily curriculum - not just any music, but bluegrass, old-time bluegrass, Appalachian mountain music - every student played music at school every day — imagine finding a school today where bluegrass music is a standard part of the daily experience,  you have to imagine it because as schools exist today it is practically an impossibility…

But we are privileged to have old-time bluegrass music, Appalachian mountain music as part of our lives every day. Liam plays everyday. Kenyon plays most days. Kenyon loves to hear Liam play. Kenyon loves to dance as Liam plays. Sometimes Kenyon strums his ukulele with Liam. Sometimes Kenyon sneaks one of Liam’s picks and plays Liam’s guitar or banjo by strumming all the strings.

People are always asking what “curriculum” we are using, buying, teaching…I always have a hard time answering…we are fluid and open and changing and serendipitous, but just as we flow, we also have traditions and rhythms and to some extend very loose routines - though I might say “themes” instead of routines - one of those themes to our daily lives is music…playing, listening, dancing, singing, whistling (when Kenyon is not around, he hates whistling!) and making our own music.

Children do not need to be made to learn about the world, or shown how. They want to, and they know how.
